Real review: Kia EV6 GT

Steve Forster, an EV enthusiast shares his experience with the Kia EV6 GT.

EV Review: Kia EV6 GT

I drive a Kia EV6 GT, the high performance version, and I've owned it for just about a year now. It's got almost 600 horsepower, so that's pretty spectacular. On a single charge, I've managed to coax 270 miles out of it, which is a bit less than the manufacturer's claim, but I probably drive a little bit faster than most of the other drivers.

The coolest and most unique features of this car, I think the first of all is, the performance. Things like the braking and the handling, which are really phenomenal. It is a really, really nice car to drive spiritedly down a nice twisty road. The suspension quality means that you're not being bumped around at all.

It's nicely compliant. It's got these, really comfy sport seats. I find them fantastic. They also give you quite good grip when you're going around corners. I've driven 10 /12 hours in a single stint, just stopping for a quick charge every couple of hours. And I find it supremely comfortable.

The other thing that I really like about it It's just totally reliable, it works really efficiently. I like the fact that I can, when I get into it in the morning on a cold day, I can pre-warm the car. That's all really easy to use.

It's a bit Marmite styling. I love it, but some people really don't like it. It's got the sloping front end, and it's got the light that goes all the way across the back end. So, from the outside, I think it looks great. Quite sporty, quite aggressive.

How do you fit charging into your schedule?

Most of my charging I'm able to do at home. It charges while I'm sleeping. So I don't have to do what I used to do in a petrol or a diesel car, which is go to a petrol station where they sell overpriced Kit Kats and you have to stand in the cold for ten minutes, fuelling your car. The occasions that I do use public charging, it's such an easy experience, and the Osprey App will tell me where it is. And I normally allow an extra ten or fifteen minutes, which is enough for about 120-150 miles to be added to the range.

I normally grab a coffee because the good charge points normally have some nice facilities, whether it's grab a coffee, grab a cold drink in the summer, so I'm not wasting time filling up at petrol stations.

Advice for someone considering the switch?

Just do it. One thing that I would debunk is that charging is hard work. And there are plenty of chargers around. So I've not had range anxiety. The good companies are so reliable. It's easy to charge. No more difficult than finding a petrol station.
