UK overtakes Norway in EV registrations.
The growing electric vehicle market in the UK.
Did you know that there are more electric cars on UK roads than in Norway? It's a compelling fact that might come as a surprise to many. At the end of 2022, the UK boasted a total of 664,000 electric cars, surpassing Norway's 604,000. While Norway is rightly regarded as a mature EV market, with an impressive 82% of new car sales being fully electric in June 2023, the sheer size of the UK's car market gives it an edge in terms of absolute numbers. The UK has taken the lead, and is only at the beginning of growth that shows no signs of slowing down.
In July 2023, fully electric vehicles accounted for a 16% market share in the UK. This figure is not just a testament to the current state of the market but also a promising sign of what lies ahead. To put this growth into perspective, Norway took just eight years to transition from a 16% market share to an astonishing 82%. The UK's EV market is only in its infancy, and the potential for further expansion is immense.
Accelerating rapid charging infrastructure.
When it comes to charging infrastructure, Norway has approximately 6,000 rapid chargers serving its EV population. Interestingly, the UK's charging infrastructure is currently about the same, with 6,900 rapid chargers in operation at the end of 2022. However, reflecting the UK's significantly larger market potential, the pace of public charger installation in the UK has skyrocketed in 2023.
Already in 2023, an additional 2,000 rapid and ultra-rapid chargers have been added to that 6,900 on the UK's public charging network. At Osprey we doubled the network's size within the 12 months leading up to June 2023. This ramp up in charger deployment underscores the commitment to serving the accelerating EV market and ensuring accessibility for all electric vehicle owners.
Much like the EV market itself, public rapid charging infrastructure in the UK is only just getting started.
With more electric cars on its roads than ever before, a steadily increasing market share, and a rapidly expanding charging infrastructure, the UK is well on its way to becoming a global leader in electric mobility. As we look ahead, the future of transportation in the UK is undoubtedly electric, and the journey is just beginning.
